History
The District of Squamish has recognized the importance of healthy communities and social development, and Council has formed advisory committees over the years to focus on these issues, with members consisting of council members, community and service providers. In the most recent past, the District of Squamish Committee on Social Development and Youth (2002 to 2005) was a municipal Committee that got the wheels in motion for the current social planning Council, which now exists as separate entity from the District of Squamish since 2005. Community agencies came together and explored various models for social planning councils. We came to a consensus that we could be most functional and useful to the community as a separate entity from the municipality so that we could work on our chosen focus areas, be strong advocates, and objectively advise the municipality on social development issues. The roots of the Social Planning Council originated from a terms of reference from the original municipal committee.
